Programme & Teamsheet:

Terry Venables joined up with the squad for his first game in charge. The game was played at Melbourne's covered Colonial Stadium and the opposition were much stronger, being champions of Chile. It took a goal of rare brilliance to separate the two teams, but it was Harry Kewell, in his home country, that provided it. It was a solo goal that could have graced any international arena. Picking the ball up in midfield he ghosted past three defenders before unleashing an unstoppable left-footed strike six minutes before half-time. Venables maintained his defence intact but replaced his midfield and strike force for the second half. Lee Bowyer had played well in his first game since his £9 transfer to Liverpool had fallen through, but he gave way to Olivier Dacourt, while Jason Wilcox replaced Stephen McPhail and Robbie Keane replaced Alan Smith, Michael Bridges replaced Mark Viduka and Robbie Fowler came on for Harry Kewell. He did make one further change in the eighty-second minute when he brought on Jacob Burns for Eirik Bakke. Dominic Matteo was outstanding in central defence for Leeds and the Chilean Champions were the better team in the second half when they twice rattled the crossbar, but usually found the Leeds to be impregnable.
